My first blog to incorporate into the classroom :Idea: Published Pieces of Writing:
My thoughts are to have students publish writing pieces on the blog, in order to share with parents, family, and friends. I have always felt students take a sense of ownership when they have a published piece of writing displayed.
This would enable parents, family, and friends to comment on their work. What students doesn't like to get recognized for great work... :)
I feel this would not take as much time away in class because students currently publish a writing piece once a month; this could be one of the options to do this.
What are the pros and cons of this idea?

I am an English teacher and feel that published writing is a great idea for blog use.
ReplyDeleteWould you have students hand write the writing, edit and revise and then type only the published piece?
I ask this because my students are given a state test each year that requires they write to a prompt. My district stresses the importance of having students practice writing with pencil and paper and therefore ask teachers to keep typing writing to a minimum. They feel students do not get the required practices with revising and editing with the use of spelling and grammar check on Microsoft Word. That would be the only con I can think of. I love your ideas of giving parents the opportunities to see their child's work on the Internet!
Yes, we do sloppy copies, edit, peer edit and then publish. So, the blog would be only for published pieces. :) We don't always publish when we write.

I feel state tests will eventually be on the computer unfortunately. It will only be a matter of time!
I completely agree that the tests will eventually be on the computer. My school started using a program that anticipates it will be able to grade students writing on the computer in one year. I am so looking forward to not having to grade 100+ writing assignments every weekend!!!
