cooperative learning blog
Cooperative learning: I use cooperative learning a lot in my third grade classroom. I like to see students working together, but individually process the information they have learned by developing a project based on the information the group has gathered, for example a poster. As I read about cooperative learning, I really thought how I could include technology in this process. I like the idea of students all researching and then possibly making a powerpoint answering questions, possibly each having a slide to do or even a slideshow individually based on ability. As to grading in a cooperative learning environment, I feel you must grade on the comprehension of the project as well working together.

Lesia,
ReplyDeleteI was wondering what you think about the grading of children in a cooperative learning scenario...should the student be graded as individuals or graded completely on the outcome of their final product? This question does present a problem for many people, including myself. I am currently deal with it at my Son's High School. He received a low grade on a project due to his small group's poor final presentation. I am biased when I say that this is unfair to him specifically since I feel he put a lot of effort into the assignment. However, as an educator, I can see the life application of this concept: in the business world, if your team does not perform, it could put each member in jeopardy of loosing their jobs. As teachers we face this reality every day with "report card" evaluations of the effectiveness of our school building. If our school's test scores sink to a certain point, we could all be laid off and/or placed in other buildings. Is that fair? Tough to call.
